Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel in Heavy Fabrication

Mild steel remains the workhorse of heavy fabrication: it is affordable, easy to weld, and simple to repair in the field. With correct surface preparation and coating it performs well for fuel tankers, containers and structural bodies.

Stainless steel earns its premium where corrosion, hygiene or chemical compatibility drive the specification. It holds up in aggressive environments without coatings, but requires more careful heat control during welding to avoid distortion and sensitisation.

Lifecycle cost, not sheet price, should drive the decision. A coated mild steel body that is recoated on schedule can outlast a poorly welded stainless assembly at a fraction of the initial spend.
